Review: Love Virtually

Synopsis
Love Virtually
'Write to me, Emmi. Writing is like kissing, but without lips. Writing is kissing with the mind.' It begins by chance: Leo receives emails in error from an unknown woman called Emmi. Being polite he replies, and Emmi writes back. A few brief exchanges are all it takes to spark a mutual interest in each other, and soon Emmi and Leo are sharing their innermost secrets and longings. The erotic tension simmers, and it seems only a matter of time before they will meet in person. But they keep putting off the moment - the prospect both excites and unsettles them. And after all, Emmi is happily married. Will their feelings for each other survive the test of a real-life encounter? And if so, what then? Love Virtually is a funny, fast-paced and utterly absorbing novel, with plenty of twists and turns, about a love affair conducted entirely by email.

Review
"Isn't it exciting that you can get involved with someone you don't know, someone you've never set eyes on and probably never will, someone you expect nothing from, of whom you can't be sure that you'll ever get anything halfway adequate in return?"

Love Virtually was a lovely surprise, a proverbial ball-busting surprise. It’s addictive, believable, relatable and captivating. With the many relationships nowadays being formed on Facebook, the prospect of forming an intense relationship with a virtual stranger is more than plausible. Love Virtually is an intense read. Within a short space of time the characters grew increasingly close forming a bond that becomes unbreakable. I expected an easy read, something that wouldn't be straining, I expected a simple love story, boy meet girl, love happens and they end up happily ever after. I didn't expect to complications, anger, betrayal, spite. This reads like a timeless classic.

Emmi is a very domineering character, she want to have it all. Leo is a romantic, a sappy romantic fool chasing a married woman. This book is written in emails which would I thought would put me off knowing my history of hate for diary entries and the like but because the emails are written with ease, I found myself falling in love with book with every email.  This book flows; the emails are well written, intelligent and captivate every emotion beautifully. I finished Love Virtually in less than a day and within hours I was gasping for more of this author's work. This book was originally in German and has been translated to English readers however there is no sign that it was ever in German, the translators mastered the dialogue and mannerisms of the characters superbly.

Love Virtually also made me question what I classify as adultery and whether if I was Emmi's husband I would be happy for my wife to have such an intense relationship with another person even if that person was a virtual character in a virtual world. I was uncomfortable knowing that Emmi was more or less committing virtual adultery if there is such a thing but I still wanted a happy ending. Emmi and Leo are clearly made for each other but the question of adultery still remains marring what they have. This is brilliant, intriguing and genuinely by far the most interesting book I've read in a long time. I would 100% recommend this wholeheartedly. Its a virtual masterpiece.

After an incident with a lecherous British trader she is sent away and is injured during the voyage when a British man-o’-war fires at the junk in which she is travelling. Second Lieutenant Kernow Keats, a Royal Marine from the man-o’-war, boards the junk and, moved by the plight of the fragile young girl, makes arrangements to take her to a mission hospital in Hong Kong where their romance blossoms. However, a love affair between a British officer and a Chinese peasant girl is unthinkable in 1857, and when Kernow becomes inextricably involved in the vicious war being waged by the Chinese Taiping rebels it seems their love is doomed. From the author of Chase the Wind and Though the Heavens May Fall this beautifully told saga is majestically woven around the lives of two people, discovering unexpected feelings in unfamiliar territory.

Review: Love Under Different Skies

Love...Under Different Skies (Love...)
Synopsis

As the hapless couple soon find out, problems have a way of following you, no matter how far you go to avoid them. Can love survive under different skies?

Review
I should start off by declaring my love for Nick Spalding, my love for his books that is. He's the author of romantic comedies, Love from Both Sides being the most successful. When I first picked up Love from Both Sides my life was brought to an embarrassing standstill. I refused to leave my bed for an entire day until I devoured it in one sitting. It was a delicious Wednesday afternoon in which I was introduced to Jamie and Laura. Nick Spalding is funny, charming and utterly compelling with his brilliant one liners i.e. "Her breath smells like the gates of Hades have opened." I was hooked on that book like a drug addict to a needle.

Like a true devotee, I devoured the next book in the sequel, Love and Sleepless Nights. Hence why when I heard he would be releasing a third book in the sequel I was more joyful than mouse in a cheese factory. I danced around in circles at the prospect of reading his new book with more enthusiasm that should probably not be acceptable for a woman over the age of 18. The third book in the sequel is different not because it is set in Australia but the mood of the book seems sombre.

Laura and Jamie are clearly past the honeymoon phrase and are experiencing some marital problems.  Love under Different Skies started very promisingly with Jamie losing his temper along with his job. This is the third book in the series therefore I wasn’t expecting the magic that illuminated from the first one (Love from Both Sides) but I did expect great things. I think that’s where my problem began, I was expecting laughs with every line, I was expecting to fall in fits of giggles, I was expecting to be wowed with every anecdote. I did giggle a few times; the image of poo wrapped in cling film in kitchen foil was priceless.

However I did feel like  some laughs were forced. Nick Spalding's obsession with bowel movement is at times worrying. Jamie's got the bowel movement of an ice age pensioner. He's inclusion of poo in every book is a concern although I do find these poo chapters extremely funny.

I love the realism Spalding brings to his characters, the descriptions are so vivid I thought I was right there with the characters experiencing vertigo. I will never tire of Jamie's antics although at times I did find Laura a little overbearing and condensing. Poppy is great character, her charm is infectious and her quick comebacks legendary. I would recommend this book 100%, it's a guaranteed laugh.

Borrowed once, Never returned

Everyone has that one friend that loves to borrow shoes, skirts, anything that looks slightly more expensive and unaffordable. I'm fine with borrowing shoes that I will never get back, that top that will be returned in tatters with no explanation or excuse or the lip-gloss with suspicious looking hairs. I can replace all that, a quick spending spree on ASOS dissolves my anger.  However when it comes to books, that anger cannot be easily quenched with a simple apology. Book borrowers are driving me crackers? Why do I hate books borrowers? Well, the book borrowers in my life are gradually turning into permanent holders.

I seem to spend my life chasing after my favourite books. I'm left in agony knowing that like that small denim shirt; I will never see my copy of the Chocolate Run. Yes, I could buy a new one, books are easily replaceable you might say but it’s not that straightforward. I bond with my books, after a good read I want to stay in bed, wrapped up in a cosy blanket with that specific book pressed against my heart. Yes, I do have a very unhealthy relationship with books but can you blame me? Books are more than just words; they represent a universe where all things are possible, a world with no imminent end.

This morning I got up with an urge to read Love in the present tense. Problem is, I borrowed it a friend a few years back and she never returned it back. After hours of begging and pleading, I finally gave hoping for the return of that wonderfully crafted book. So in remembrance of the books I loved, borrowed and lost, I'm dedicating five days to five incredible books I will never see again. Today's book is Love in the Present Tense.

How do you go on loving someone who isn't there? Author Interview: Lily Zante

Lily Zante

Author Lily Zante is back with her new An Unexpected Gift, a novella about two people who meet in horrific circumstances and learn to deal with the attraction between them. I loved her previous novella Love Inc and currently I'm indulging in The Proposal, her second novella. This interview gave me an opportunity to understand Lily Zante as an author, she’s very passionate about writing and her love of books and writing is clear from the onset. I look forward to reading more of her novellas. An Unexpected Gift will be available on Kindle very soon. Enjoy and thanks to Lily Zane for the wonderful insight into her world.

1. What inspires you to write?

I've always loved writing and it started back in my childhood. I would end up writing pages and pages for stories that my teachers would set us! I suppose I enjoy creating different worlds and characters and then seeing what my characters get up to. It comes from my love of reading....not so much now (as I don't have as much time) but when I was younger I could easily lose myself in a book. I could escape just by reading and it was bliss. I started writing again when I graduated which was about twenty years ago. I even took correspondence classes in writing and I would submit my short stories to competitions. I even submitted them to publishers, going down the traditional publishing route. I was never published...except for one article in a woman's magazine, QWF I think it was called (Quality Women's Fiction). I got lots of rejection letters with some nice constructive criticisms. Then I forgot about it and got a job instead. I only recently got back into writing about a year ago. Amazon has made it easier for indie publishers to start writing. This time around, we don't have to get past the gatekeepers but we can submit our work to the world and let the people who really count- the readers tell us how we're doing.

2. What should we expect from your new book? Are there many

similarities between Love Inc and An Unexpected Gift?

My new book, An Unexpected Gift is about two people who meet in the
most horrific of circumstances and learn to deal with that as well as their attraction to one another. Love Inc was about two people who at first seem so completely different but as they work together, they come to realise that they are not so different after all. I suppose you could say that at the moment I am experimenting with writing romance stories. So my three latest books (An Unexpected Gift should be out in a few days) are based around two main characters who are attracted to one another and then, after a series of problems, they fall in love.

When I was at school, I read "The Diary of Anne Frank" and I found it poignant and horrific at the same time. I felt as though I was getting a rare glimpse into a slice of this young girl's life with her family under what must have been the worst situation imaginable. A diary is such a personal thing and I felt as though I was intruding into that privacy, yet unable to stop reading. And knowing that it is a true story, with such an unhappy ending, made it all the more sad for me. After that, I started writing a diary myself and kept it going for about twenty years. I used to write in it every single day. Writing my thoughts down on paper at the end of each day helped me get through some high and low points of my life...including my teen years which I'm sure can be quite angst ridden for most of us!

Books that I have loved and lost myself in would be "Rebecca" by
Daphne Du Maurier. I remember reading the scene where the second Mrs De Winter unknowingly wears the same ball gown that Rebecca wore to the ball before. I was desperate to go the toilet but couldn't tear myself away from the book until I had read past that chapter. More recently, I read Tom McNeal's "To Be Sung Underwater" and I was in tears when I finished reading it. I went for weeks thinking about the main characters and I would re-read certain paragraphs in the book. I think I became a bit obsessed by this story. And that is the power of books. They can evoke such strong feelings and consume you.

I read "The Hunger Games' trilogy this summer and my eleven year old
daughter and I were racing to get through all the books. I loved those books and found the writing to be so fast paced. Each time I'd get to the end of a chapter, there was such a hook that I had no choice but to read the next chapter. I think I read each book overnight because in the morning my daughter would read it and we were racing to get through them all.I love that my children have the same love of reading too.

3. Many authors hate the term “chicklit”, what are your thoughts
 on being a chicklit author?

To be honest, I haven't even thought of myself as a "chicklit" author. I have only written three romance stories. I have also written two YA zombie horror books and I had a great time writing those books too! However, I am enjoying writing romance and once I have a few more books under my belt, I'm hoping to start working on something that is a romance story but a little darker. So, I don't label myself as being a "chicklit" author. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters to me is to produce something that invokes a response in the reader. Whether that is to make them laugh, cry, chuckle a little, lose themselves for a little while or to say "I hate this!" The last one is not the response I want, but I'm still interested in hearing why they hated it. I always use feedback to improve. I know you can't please everyone, and I don't try to - I try to write the sorts of books that I would want to read. But I am constantly learning and trying to improve.

4. You regularly use twitter, do you enjoy interactions between

.To be fair, I am fairly new to using Twitter and Facebook. I'm trying to reach out to other writers, to learn about the whole writing process as well as to find out what it is that readers are looking for in romance books. Of course, there's a whole array of different types of romance books and then there is the erotica stuff too. The best compliments I have received are where the readers tell me that they really enjoyed my book because the characters are so believable and they want to read more of my work! What more could an author ask for?

5. What are your opinions on Men writing romantic chicklits?
They say that men like pictures whereas women like to read about and
connect with emotions. I think that is true to a degree but again this might also be an over generalization.
Women like connections. And I try to write from that point of view. But, to answer your question - it doesn't matter if a man wrote a
romantic chicklit, what matters is that he writes a good book that women love.
